Product Description

This totem is an authentic "Carranca of the São Francisco River", produced by the artisan Maria da Cruz, daughter of the legendary Ana das Carrancas, of Petrolina, a city of the State of Pernambuco situated on the São Francisco River. The São Francisco River is one of the most important Brazilian rivers, Called the "river of national integration" because it had long been the main link between the southeastern and northeastern regions of the country.

The frowning figures were originally used on the bows of the boats that went down and up the river in order to protect them from the dangers - many attributed to "evil spirits." Over time, they have become a popular art form throughout Brazil. The high aesthetic quality of the work of Ana das Carrancas, the "lady of clay", greatly contributed to its popularity.

Ana passed away in 2008, at age 85, but her knowledge and technique remain alive in the work of her daughters. A curious detail: the figures created by Ana and her daughters have hollow eyes. This is thought to be a homage to her husband who was visually impaired.
