Product Description

This bracelet is made of the highest quality golden grass, hand-woven by our skilled artisans. The shiny golden grass looks like gold plus, it is light and durable. Bring a bit of Brazil to your style and you will be sure to impress!

Syngonanthus nitens or golden grass is a noble grass-like species of Eriocaulaceae which exists in the region of Jalapão, state of Tocantins - within the cerrado, a vast tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil. Its main characteristic is the bright gold color hence, the name "Capim Dourado," which literally means "golden grass."

Over a century ago, Indigenous people from the "Xerente" ethnicity taught the golden grass handicraft technique to inhabitants of the Mumbuca village, an Afro-Brazilian community in the Jalapão region. Due to the growth of ecotourism golden grass has been adopted as one of the state's symbols, since handicraft from this material is now also produced at other locations in the region.

The handicrafts are made using coils of golden grass, manually sewn tightly together with strands from the Moriche Palm's (Mauritia flexuosa) young leaves. For decades women, for household uses and/or sporadic selling, made the handicrafts. Today, there are at least 12 local community associations and many families depend on this work for their household's income. There is also a strict state regulation protecting the extinction of this historically important raw material, considering the environmental, social and economic concerns.
