Product Description

These intricate placemats are handmade with a embroidery technique called "filé" stitching. These unique pieces were created by an association of women from the Northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas. These techniques were handed down from generation to generation over the past 200 years. Each handmade placemat is unique in its pattern, color selection and stitching. These distinctions make each and every placemat a one of a kind adornment. .

Who made these placemats:

These placemats were produced by a cooperative by the name of Pontal da Barra Women's Association founded over 20 years ago. The success of the association led it to be supported by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) for the past 10 years. SEBRAE prepares the artisans and teaches them to be self sufficient. Today the association complements the income of more than 1,100 families in the Pontal da Barra region.

A bit of history:

This type of stitching is native to the Pontal da Barra region. Pontal da Barra is located in the arid Northeastern state of Alagoas known for its local fishing villages. This technique has been developed over the past 200 years. As fishing was the common activity for the men of these villages, the women would stay home and take care of the families. This rustic looking stitching is called "filé" and resembles local fishing nets. The artisans weave these patterns with improvised needles made from the spokes of bicycle tires. These pieces are one of a kind and bring with them the history and culture of this magnificent area of Brazil.
