Product Description

This unique mask is hand carved and brings a part of ancient native artwork into your home. Natives believe that this mask has mystical powers of protection. These techniques were handed down from generation to generation over the past 200 years. Each handmade item is unique in its pattern and color selection. These distinctions make each and every piece a one of a kind adornment.

Who made these items:

These items were produced by the ceramic studio named Arte Mangue by Ronaldo Guedes. Arte Mangue is one of the most traditional and respected ceramic studios on the Island. The local artisans are trained by Ronaldo Guedes and their products are sold once they have reached mastery of the trade. The studio also has a community service component where they mentor, educate and entertain local children in a community school. The Arte Mangue studio complements the income of many families on the island of Marajo.

A bit of history:

Marajó is a coastal island located in the state of Pará, Brazil. Marajo is the largest fluvial island in the world. The Marajoara or Marajó culture was a pre-Columbian era society that flourished on Marajó island at the mouth of the Amazon River. From approximately 400 BC to 1600 AD, Marajó was the site of an advanced society called the Marajoara culture, which may have numbered over 100,000 people at its peak. The culture seems to have persisted into the colonial era. Today, the island is known for its large water buffalo population, as well as the pororoca tidal phenomenon exhibited by the surrounding Amazon delta
